Located on Highway 98 near the city
of Mary Esther, Hurlburt Field is the home of the 16th
Special Operations Wing consisting of approximately
7,000 highly trained military professionals who
stand ready to conduct special operations missions at a
moment's notice. The wing is the largest Air Force unit
assigned to the U.S. Special Operations Command, a
command responsible for conducting special operations
worldwide in such military contingencies as the capture
of Manuel Noriega in Panama, Operation Desert Storm,
Operation Provide Hope in Somalia, Operation Uphold
Democracy in Haiti and operations Deny Flight and Joint
Endeavor in the former Yugoslavia, the airmen of the
16th SOW have proven their motto to be true "Any
Time...Any Place".
Eglin Air Force Base was established
in 1933. Covering 724 square miles of land range and
more than 85,000 square miles of water ranges, Eglin is
the largest Air Force installation in the U.S. and one
of the largest in the world. Housed on the installation
is the Air Force Development Test Center which plans,
directs, tests and evaluates non-nuclear munitions,
electronic combat, and navigation/guidance systems. A
self contained community, Eglin employs 10,400 military
personnel and 6,000 civilian employees and has a payroll
of more than $410 million. The base has its own
hospital, branch college campuses, housing and shopping
facilities. Areas of the reservation are open to the
public for hunting, fishing and camping.
